Different types of bias tapes

Bias tape is a strip of fabric you can buy premade at shops or make yourself – it is basically a long fabric piece cut on the bias grain of the fabric. The tape is used to finish armholes, necklines, and other edges and also as drawstrings, straps, etc.

It is available as a Single fold Bias Tape in widths of 1/2 inches, or 7/8 inches. In a single fold bias tape the side edges of the fabric strip are folded lengthwise to the middle of the strip. Double Fold Bias Tape is a single fold bias tape folded again to the middle. It usually measures 1/4 inches (but a wider one can measure 1/2 inch).  A double fold bias tape is used to finish the edges or as drawstring, cord etc.

This article is very helpful. Thank you for all this information.
I inherited some various binding tapes and trims. One is a 1/2” wide, flat, white thinner polyester with a gold thread that runs along the center.
I’ve had no luck googling it and hope you can help me. I have 40 yards so would like to put it to use.
    Thanks in advance

    • Sounds like a polyester ribbon with metallic thread. You can use it to wrap gift baskets, cover a cushion face, use it for scrapbooking etc. It may not be strong enough to provide a durable and secure binding for edges, for clothes. Bags, accessories and such items which does not have too much wear and tear or washing will be alright.

Hello, does anyone know where I can buy the iron on tape that is used in men’s suit cuffs. It has two separate one sided tape but both pieces are held together with an invisible stitch……. its not a standard iron on hemming tape. This tape allows the cuffs to not be fully glued tight, but secures it in place without having to invisible stitch it by hand.

Hope this make sense. I have visited many haberdashery who have no idea what it’s called.

    Many thanks

Great site. Do you think I can sew metallic gimp tape onto a ladies top as trim on the sleeves? It is difficult to work with. I’m more concerned about attaching it than laundering it.

      Hi,
If you have a lip to your trim you can sew it with your sewing machine with a zipper presser foot; or use hand whip stitch to attach.

Sorry did not mean my reply to be cancelled as I need to finish this project for my grandchildren and I cannot get to shops due to lockdown and age. Tape for stringing triangular flags together.

    • Sarina

      Hi Pamela
Are you looking for Nylon cord/rope ?

    • Alice

Twill tape would probably work best. I would finish the pennant portion first then topstitch the top part of the pennant to the twill tape using two or three rows of stitching.
